Emma Raducanu proving she could be real threat at 2025 Australian Open
By Lee Vowell
Maybe Emma Raducanu was not destined to be a one-time Grand Slam winner after all. She won the 2021 US Open after going on a run where she did not face a top-10 player. Since 2022, she has dealt with issues with her form, and various injuries. Beginning in late 2024, though, things appeared to tick up a bit for the player.
After getting a victory in the second round of the 2025 Australian Open over Amanda Anisimova in straight sets 6-3 7-5, the Brit has now accomplished something she never had in Melbourne before. She reached the third round. She also is playing something akin to the form that got her the major win in New York.
She did not play perfectly, though. She was broken early in both sets, but she was able to fight back quickly and overtake Anisimova. Raducanu was the better player in nearly every facet, and should she clean up her serve a bit more, she is going to be an issue for any player to face. That includes a very tough matchup in the third round.
Emma Raducanu making an impact at the 2025 Australian Open and Nick Kyrgios is done
Raducanu is scheduled to play WTA No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the next round, and the Brit has never beaten the Pole. In fact, Raducanu has never won a set against Swiatek. Two of the matches have been on clay, Swiatek's best surface, but the Pole also got the better of the Brit on the hard courts of Indian Wells in 2023.
In other news from the Australian Open, Nick Kyrgios' comeback was cut short in both singles and doubles. He lost his opening-round match in singles, and then he and his partner, Thanasi Kokkinakis, retired during the first-round match in doubles. The pair was trailing James Duckworth and Aleksandar Vukic 5-7 2-3.
The reason for the retirement does not appear to be solely on Kyrgios, though. He was only part of the reason. He was dealing with a strained abdominal muscle (the Aussie does appear to get hurt easily) while Kokkinakis was having a right shoulder issue.
After the match, Kyrgios gave the media a brutally honest assessment of his future at the Australian Open. He said, "I mean, realistically, I can’t really see myself probably playing singles again here."
Kokkinakis is also out of the singles portion of the tournament. He lost to Jack Draper in five sets in the second round.
