Coco Gauff needs to fix her serve. The 21-year-old American could end up being one of the best women's players who ever picked up a racket, but she will fail to reach her potential if she does not fix her constant service issues.
Double faults have always been a problem for the young player. She led the WTA in double faults per match in 2024 with six, but in 2025, the issue remains. She has nearly 40 more than any other player, and the difference between her and second place is the same as between second place and eighth.
At one point deep in the second set against Marie Bouzkova in the third round of the 2025 French Open, Gauff had no aces and four double faults. That kind of inefficiency is going to keep Gauff from winning the multiple Grand Slams she has the talent to earn.
Coco Gauff beats Marie Bouzkova to reach fourth of the 2025 French Open
After a smooth first set, which the American won 6-1, the service struggles began. Not just for Gauff, but both players. At one point, the returner had won seven straight games. Finally, Gauff was able to hold to even the set 5-all, but then Bouzkova held, and Gauff needed to hold to force a tie-break to keep the match from going three sets.
It never should have even been an issue. Gauff moves better than nearly any player, can hit with power from both wings, and is a lot more athletic than most of her opponents. But that serve is a mess. The frustrating thing from a tennis fan's perspective is that she must know that and has the talent to fix the problem, but it doesn't get fixed.
Gauff was able to hold to force a tie-break and was able to easily the tie-break and take the match 6-1 7-6(3). She has to play better to win the French Open, though. She will next play Ekaterina Alexandrova in the fourth round.
