The 2025 French Open first-round matches are complete. A mixture of veterans, young players, qualifiers, and seeds have gotten their first taste of Roland Garros this year.

At every Grand Slam, we hear about the next generation of players and wonder if this will be the event that one (or more) of those teenage stars hoists the trophy at the end of seven rounds of play.

We were watching eight players in particular, and here is how they did.

How did tennis's young stars do in the first round of the 2025 French Open?

1. Joao Fonseca won

The Brazilian 18-year-old João Fonseca has been invigorating the sport for the past nine months. He has a strong fan base that makes the match atmosphere feel like a European soccer game, more so than a tennis match.

Fonseca defeated Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets. This was a significant statement win for Fonseca, who led the match from start to finish. Hurkacz did not seem to move as well and could still be thinking about last week's Geneva Open final, which he should have won over Novak Djokovic.

2. Jakub Mensik won

Mensik, 19, the 2025 Miami Open champion, showed that he had grit and a good clay-court game in a match against the crowd favorite, French clay-court specialist Alexander Muller. Jakub Mensik handled Muller, the raucous French crowd, and the moment to win in four sets.

3. Mirra Andreeva won

Like Mensik, Mirra Andreeva has been winning big in 2025 with back-to-back WTA 1000 victories in Dubai and Indian Wells. The 18-year-old Andreeva enjoys playing on the clay and was a semifinalist at Roland Garros last year, picking up a big win over Aryna Sabalenka.

4. Victoria Mboko won

Canada is buzzing over 18-year-old up-and-comer and French Open qualifier Victoria Mboko, who defeated Lulu Sun in her first-ever WTA French Open appearance. Mboko has an intriguing second-round match scheduled for Wednesday. She will face Eva Lys, who upset American Peyton Stearns in her first round match.

5. Alexandra Eala lost

Since we last saw her at the Miami Open when she defeated three Grand Slam winners (Madison Keys, Jelena Ostapenko, and Iga Swiatek), Filipina tennis star Alexandra Eala turned 20. Despite training at the Rafael Nadal Academy, Eala has admitted that clay is not her favorite surface, which could explain her first-round singles exit. She won her first-round doubles match.

6. Maya Joint lost

In Paris, Australian Maya Joint lost to her countrywoman Ajla Tomljanovic, who ironically had to retire from their match last week in Rabat. Joint went on to win the Rabat singles and doubles titles.

7. and 8. Alex Michelsen and Learner Tien lost

20-year-old Alex Michelsen lost in straight sets to Argentinian Juan Manuel Cerundolo. His fellow American friend and compatriot, Learner Tien, 19, lost to Alexander Zverev. American men notoriously struggle on the European red clay in Paris, and they were not alone in early exits; the USA's top-ranked male player and World No. 4, Taylor Fritz, also lost in the first round.
