Maja Chwalinska might never come close to making the final of a Grand Slam ever again, but the hope for many tennis fans after watching the Polish player's run at the French Open is that Chwalinska will continue to have high-end success. She earned it.
Just as she earned every win she had at Roland Garros, until she was fairly dominated by Mirra Andreeva in the final. The Russian won in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, to take her first major title. While Andreeva got a bit more noticed by sports fans in general because of the victory in Paris, tennis followers already knew her well.
As for her skill level, it's immense, and Chwalinska said as much following the match while receiving her award for finishing second. The Pole told Andreeva, "You're so talented, it's annoying."
Mirra Andreeva won the hardware at the 2026 French Open, but Maja Chwalinska was making an emotional connection
Not only was the heartfelt statement supposed to make people laugh, but no doubt that Chwalinska meant the words. At the same time, her class in losing was not lost on those in attendance at the event and those elsewhere streaming and watching on television.
Chwalinska gained many fans over her three-week run at the French Open (three weeks because she had to make it through qualifiers to even have a chance in the main draw) because of her personality, as well as her play. She couldn't overpower anyone, but she kept points alive by acting as the kind of wall the general public might hit against at their local tennis courts.
Sure, Maja Chwalinska would beat most of the general population, but she still felt like one of us because of how she played and because she seemingly understood just how lucky she was to keep winning match after match to be in a position to win the title at the end.
She didn't win Roland Garros, however, even though many rooted for her to because, as she said, 19-year-old Andreeva has so much talent that it's somewhat "annoying." Most tennis fans can never reach Andreeva's level or even come close, but maybe we could at least mimic Chwalinska's game in our Thursday night singles leagues.
Next for Mirra Andreeva is a lead-up event to Wimbledon, where she will be considered one of the favorites. For Chwalinska, she might not be able to get into Wimbledon because her ranking was so low (No. 114) before Roland Garros. Let's just hope her French Open story is not the last we hear about the Polish player.
