Nick Kyrgios needed to do well last week at the Stuttgart Open to try to get his ranking up and please the Wimbledon committee that hands out wild cards, but after taking a set in his first match in Germany, he dropped the next two. His next event was supposed to be the Halle Open, but that won't happen.

Kyrgios chose to withdraw from both singles and doubles just hours before he was supposed to play his first doubles match. In his place will be the lucky loser, Lorenzo Sonego. Not that that matters to many fans. Love him or greatly dislike him, Kyrgios makes for must-watch tennis because one never knows exactly what he will do.

The same holds for Emma Raducanu in nearly all aspects. She does play more and has certainly had series injuries, but after making a deep run at the HSBC Champions, she decided to withdraw from her next event (this week's Nottingham Open) due to an injury.

Nick Kyrgios and Emma Raducanu keep going down the same path

Raducanu and Kyrgios have taken somewhat similar paths in their careers. Both are capable of elite play, both seem to get injured easily, and even when they return to the sport, they don't continuously keep playing for long. No one is likely shocked that Kyrgios withdrew from Halle or Raducanu from Nottingham.

One might also wonder how much Kyrgios wants to play the sport. He takes months off claiming injury, recently returned ahead of Wimbledon (he made the final at the event in 2022, and grass is likely his best surface), only to drop out of his second tune-up tournament.

This isn't to say Kyrgios isn't hurt, but the timing does seem odd. He was certainly fine at the Boss Open in Stuttgart and was participating in both singles and doubles. He didn't play in either long enough to appear to get hurt. There was no mention of injury before his first doubles match in Halle until hours before he was set to play.

Nick Kyrgios also cannot be sure that his participation in Wimbledon is assured, either. He doesn't have the ranking (he isn't ranked at all due to a long layoff) to automatically get in, and he hasn't been given a wild card to enter yet, either. After his withdrawal from Halle, Wimbledon officials aren't going to be quick to hand him the wild card.

As for Emma Raducanu, she is expected to play in Eastbourne next week. She might withdraw from that as well, if she wants to be fully rested for Wimbledon, which begins on June 29. Her missing Eastbourne would likely shock no one.
