Wednesday night provides a thrilling doubleheader of WTA Tennis at the 2024 Charleston Open. Clay court season is upon us, and the green clay of Charleston hosts two excellent matches. The first is Danielle Collins vs. Ons Jabeur, and the second is Sloane Stephens vs. Leylah Fernandez. Collins vs. Jabeur begins at 6:00 PM EDT, and Stephens vs. Fernandez follows beginning at approximately 7:15 PM EDT.

Danielle Collins can do no wrong. Last week, she won the Miami Open on hardcourts. She opened up in Charleston with a convincing clay court win over Paula Badosa. She is playing without fear and hitting the ball very well. Collins already won 21 matches in 2024, one more than her total victories last year. She will retire at the end of the 2024 season on a high note.

Ons Jabeur has struggled with injury, consistency, and confidence. She is 2-5 in 2024 and needs to get on a winning streak before the spring and summer. There is no better time than the present for Jabeur to regain her winning ways than with a huge win over a great player such as Collins who is playing some of the best tennis in her career.

Stephens vs. Fernandez is an interesting match

Sloane Stephens has been candid about the one that got away, the 2018 French Open final against Simona Halep. Stephens's favorite surface is clay, and Roland Garros has long been her dream slam to win.

Whether she has another chance or not in Paris is to be determined, but she faces a tough challenge in Canada's Leylah Fernandez on Wednesday night. Fernandez is 3-0 in previous matches against Fermandez spanning from 2020 to 2021. The two have never played on clay.

Stephens laughed as she called Fernandez her "arch nemesis." Fernandez is the higher seed of the pair at 34th while Stephens is 40th. Both are .500 in 2024 with Stephens at 8-8 and Fernandez at 7-7.
