Alex De Minaur wins ATP 500 title in Acapulco but skips the after-party
Alex de Minaur continues a career-blazing 2024 with an ATP 500 win in Acapulco on Saturday night. Both he and his opponent, Casper Ruud, had a lot on the line in the final. Ruud was seeking the biggest title of his career and with a win, he would return to the Top 10. De Minaur's victory sealed his position in the Top 10 and was the first time he defended a title. The 2023 and 2024 champion is the first to defend an Acapulco title in over a decade since David Ferrer accomplished it.
The hot and humid conditions reduced the players to pools of sweat, but de Minaur used his speed and shotmaking to get the victory in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Ruud started the second set strong with a break of de Minaur's serve but he quickly earned the break back.
With a few days until Indian Wells, the Mexican fiesta could be in high gear for de Minaur and his team, but he opted to skip the celebratory party scene for a very good reason.
De Minaur's Plan
De Minaur's girlfriend, Katie Boulter is playing in the WTA 500 San Diego Open final against Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk on Sunday. This is her first WTA 500 final after a convincing semifinal victory over American Emma Navarro in straight sets on Saturday. A rain delay interrupted play but did not dampen Boulter's impressive performance.
De Minaur, 25, gave up the post-party to fly out of Acapulco early Sunday morning to be in Boulter's box cheering her on in San Diego. He credits his relationship with Boulter for his success on the court and wants to be by her side for the biggest match of her career. Not only is he a champion, but he is also a great boyfriend.
