Amanda Anisimova puts social media troll back in his detestable hole

After a deep run at the National Bank Open, Amanda Anisimova also had to battle with a sad internet troll as well.

Amanda Anisimova hasn't had the best of years so far, but she saw an uptick in success by making an unexpected run at the National Bank Open. On her way to the final, she defeated Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets in the quarterfinals and then defeated Emma Navarro in the semifinals. Though she lost to Jessica Pegula in the final, Anisimova is now back in the top 50 of the WTA tour.

Over the course of her career, the 22-year-old American has been open about dealing with mental health issues. This includes taking a break from tennis in 2023. She understood that she was young enough to return to the sport and still have a long career. She also understood that taking care of herself first was more important.

Unfortunately, while Anisimova could celebrate her success in the Canadian Open, she wasn't going to be able to do that on social media. Platforms like X/Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram can be great for interacting with fans, but that also means trolls can get in and comment on players as well. Much more for female athletes than for male athletes, trolls tend to comment on their appearance.

The American might not look exactly like some other players, but there should also be no doubt that playing an endurance sport such as tennis means a player has a relatively high level of fitness. If this did not happen, a player would physically struggle through nearly any match.

One detestable troll on X/Twitter, though, could not help himself. He not only commented on a post by The Tennis Letter about Anisimova saying her goals include reaching No. 1 and winning at least one Grand Slam with sexism, but he was also grossly insulting suggesting Anisimova stop "eating like a cow."

Of course, the troll (whose name is being withheld because he is already getting the attention he wants) would have no idea what Anisimova's diet is like. To be clear, he is already starting from a point of ignorance. Then he wrote, "Why? She wants to be world Nr. 1 player and win a GS. Being overweight as a professional athlete doesn’t really help her reach her goals."

What is ironic is that the troll is trying to speak as if he is better than the player, but he doesn't seem to understand grammar. "Nr. 1"? What? Maybe he should write "No. 1" next time.

Anisimova, however, was not going to stay quiet after being insulted. She responded, "Don’t you have anything better to do than comment on a 22 year olds body? Like do you have a job or friends ? Damn dude...trust me, I’m okay and I don’t think anyone here is asking for your advice lolz."

The troll then responded to that by starting his next post with "In this context, it doesn’t matter how old she is." Beyond the other grammatical he keeps making - in part, he wrote, "You seem to stupid to understand that." - one might wonder why he says "she" as if he doesn't know who he is responding to.

Let's hope that Anisimova was simply responding to a bot and not a real person. The sad part is that is probably not the case. People can be mean on social media because they don't have to say something to one's face. If they did, they likely would not say such mean things.
