2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu won in her first competitive tennis match in nine months. Hampered with a back injury since the fall of 2023, Andreescu made her return to the WTA Tour with a first-round match win over Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Sorribes Tormo, 27, was not an easy first-round opponent. The Spaniard is ranked World No. 43, and her best Grand Slam results have occurred at Roland Garros in 2023 when she advanced to the fourth round. She has won two WTA titles in her career.

Andreescu, 23, possesses three WTA titles (including the US Open). She advanced to the third round at Roland Garros last year. She has an all-court game but is most associated with hardcourt wins because of the Indian Wells and US Open wins that bookeneded her career year of 2019.

Bianca Andreescu is a fan-favorite that fans want to see stay healthy

Andreescu has dealt with injuries that kept her off the court since her 2019 dream season. During her time away, she wrote a children's book and advocated for mental health awareness.

She is so young but has already been around so long that fans wonder what could happen if she went on an injury-free playing tear for more than a few months. Andreescu has been practicing for four months and feels good mentally and physically. Representing Canada in the Olympics is among her highest priorities in 2024.

Today's match was yet another successful restart. Andreescu defeated Sorribes Tormo in straight sets and will face Dubai finalist Anna Kalinskaya in the next round.

Though Iga Swiatek remains the favorite to win this tournament, there is an interesting dynamic this year with all of the Grand Slam champions who are coming back to the game after injury and childbirth. Angelique Kerber, Naomi Osaka, and Andreescu are among the players in the draw who are attempting to regain their winning form and ways after absences from the game.
