Carlos Alcaraz jokingly sends warning to his coach after working with Bjorn Borg
By Lee Vowell
Carlos Alcaraz had never played at the Laver Cup before. Of course, he is only 21 years old and will likely have a lot more opportunities to do so. Since it was Alcaraz's maiden voyage at the yearly event, he got to experience what it means to play on a team of fellow ATP players for the first time.
Sure, the Spaniard had played at the Davis Cup, but the Laver Cup has a different feel. Players from different countries come together to represent either Team World or Team Europe, and instead of having their own coaches working with them, the players have a coach over the team.
For the final time, Bjorn Borg coached Alcaraz and Team Europe. Beginning in 2025, Yannick Noah will be at the helm for Team Europe. Noah was a fine player, but nowhere near the quality or level of success that Borg had. Noah won one Grand Slam; Borg won 11.
Carlos Alcaraz jokes that he might want to move on from coach Juan Carlos Ferrero
There likely isn't a lot of coaching that happens at the Laver Cup either, to be fair. Borg and Team World Captain John McEnroe were there more as cheerleaders and for scheduling purposes. They might offer pointers to players, but there is not any talk of a player changing an approach for a long-term plan.
The above is important in relation to Alcaraz's comments after winning his first singles match at the 2024 Laver Cup. He had lost his first match while teaming with Alexander Zverev in doubles. The pair lost to a team of Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
The first chance Alcaraz had to celebrate was after he defeated Ben Shelton on Saturday. With Roger Federer watching Alcaraz for the first time ever, Alcaraz joked in his on-court post-match interview that after working with Borg and being watched by Federer, maybe Alcaraz would fire his current coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Alcaraz said, "It’s totally different. For me, it’s a privilege to play for Bjorn and for my team. All I want to say is, Juan Carlos, if he’s watching this, be careful with the position of coach because I have great coaches here!"
Ferrero doesn't have any reason to truly be nervous, of course. He and Alcaraz have been far too successful together already for a change to be made.
