Daniil Medvedev should not have done it and he knows it. In a Laver Cup match over the weekend when he was playing Ben Shelton, Medvedev got frustrated during the first set tie-break and he threw his racket. Thankfully, the racket did not appear to hit anyone in the stands or he would have been automatically disqualified.

Team World still wanted the Russian taken out of the match, though. Frances Tiafoe appeared to speak with Laver Cup supervisors in an attempt to do so. In the end, Medvedev simply was issued a code violation, and play continued. Shelton would win the match by winning the tie-break after each player had won a set.

After the match, Medvedev admitted his mistake and said while he did mean to throw the racket in frustration, he did not mean for it to end up toward the crowd. The Russian told the press, "I mean... I meant to throw (the racket) in one place, which is a bad move on my part. I was lucky (to not be disqualified), that’s true. I didn’t hit anyone. And when you don’t hit anyone, you’re not disqualified. That’s all. But I think I shouldn’t have done that."

Daniil Medvedev lucky to not be disqualified and Emma Raducanu is injured again

Medvedev is somewhat of a divisive figure in tennis. He has an exceptionally dry sense of humor that some don't quite understand. Still, he did make a mistake by throwing the racket, but that does not make him a bad human being.

In completely different news, 2021 US Open winner Emma Raducanu is once again struggling with an injury. Last year, the Brit required surgery on both her wrists and one of her ankles. Her 2024 season has been inconsistent, though she has shown flashes of brilliance.

This includes making the quarterfinals at the recent Qatar Open, but Raducanu was forced to withdraw before her match with Daria Kasaktina with a foot injury. The severity of the injury was unknown at the time and still is. Clearly, her foot is bothering her as she withdrew from this week's China Open with the same problem.

There is no timeline for Raducanu's return, but one might wonder if she will always be battling injury concerns. She is only 21 years old and could have a long-term successful career. She just needs to find a way to stay healthy first.
