WTA winners and losers from the 2024 Grand Slams
2024 was the year of repeat Major champions on the WTA Tour, as the three women to capture Grand Slams this season had won at least one before. The year started with Aryna Sabalenka winning her second Australian Open title and ended with Sabalenka taking home her first US Open trophy.
Sandwiched in between, we saw Iga Swiatek win her fourth French Open title and Barbora Krejcikova win Wimbledon for the first time.
Despite only Sabalenka, Swiatek, and Krejcikova winning Grand Slams in 2024, there were a number of great Major performances from other WTA players. On the other hand, there were a few players who despite having big expectations at the Majors, failed to perform at their best when it mattered most. Here are a few WTA winners and losers from the 2024 Grand Slams.
WTA winners and losers from the 2024 Grand Slams
Winner: Aryna Sabalenka
Aryna Sabalenka lost just one match at the Grand Slams in 2024. Not only did she defend her Australian Open title, but she also avenged last year's US Open final loss by capturing the trophy in New York to end the Grand Slam season. Sabalenka leaves 2024 with three Majors to her name and will be the favorite come January when the Australian Open rolls around.
Loser: Coco Gauff
Many expected that after winning the US Open last year, Coco Gauff would take the next step and win again come 2024. Instead, Gauff failed to make a Grand Slam final and was knocked out in the round of 16 at two of the Majors. Her serve let her down in big moments, and will be something her team needs to address moving into 2025.
Winner: Jasmine Paolini
Jasmine Paolini came out of nowhere this season. Her best result at a Grand Slam prior to this year was a second-round appearance. In 2024, Paolini made the final at the French Open and Wimbledon and made the fourth round in Australia and New York. She finished the year tied with Sabalenka for the most matches won at the 2024 Grand Slams with 18.
Loser: Elena Rybakina
Unfortunately for Elena Rybakina, she just was not able to stay healthy for much of the season, and it certainly affected her results at the Majors. Rybakina failed to reach a Major final in a season for the first time since 2021. Her Grand Slam season ended with her withdrawing at the US Open prior to her second-round match due to injury.
Winner: Barbora Krejcikova
Although her Grand Slam results were all over the place in 2024, the fact that Barbora Krejcikova was able to add a second singles Major title to her collection is incredible. Krejcikova, who had never made it past the fourth round at Wimbledon coming into this year's event, defeated four seeded players in a row on her way to the title.
Loser: Daria Kasatkina
Daria Kasatkina has the game to beat top players and go deep into Majors, but she was unable to do that in 2024. Kasatkina went 5-4 at the Slams this year, which is her least amount of Grand Slam wins in a season since 2020. She failed to reach the fourth round at all the Majors, and only got past the second round at Wimbledon.
