Quentin Halys is 29 years old, but has toiled on the ATP Tour for 14 years. Entering the final of the Generali Open against Alexander Bublik, Halys had only reached one tour-level final. He lost in Gstaad in 2024, though.
In other words, he had never won a title, and he seemed unlikely to do so against the more accomplished Bublik. Instead, Halys played arguably the best match of his career and took home the trophy. Few things are better in tennis than winning a first title. Maybe nothing is.
Bublik didn't perform poorly. He has a huge serve, and that, at times, kept Halys off-balance, but even the powerful Kazakhstani couldn't compete with the Frenchman's bombastic groundstrokes from both wings. He serves brilliantly, but his real weapon was his forehand.

He also proved to be the more aggressive player. He finished with 28 winners and just 21 unforced errors. It was precision tennis at its best. Maybe Halys will never be able to replicate the performance, but he doesn't have to worry about that. He became the journeyman who finally wins a tournament, just as most fans would dream of doing.
Halys also came into the net far more, winning 12 of 17 points when doing so. Even more stunningly, he won more points from the baseline (41-31) than did Bublik. This resulted in a 6-4, 7-6(6) victory that he and his family will never forget. How amazing it must have felt to make the post-tournament speech by getting the winner's trophy for the first time.
Alexander Bublik had 15 winners and 14 unforced errors, so he was playing cleanly, too. The match wasn't one where whoever played suddenly better was going to win it. Instead, Quentin Halys won the match in style, and that had to make earning his first ATP tournament title even sweeter.
Entering the tournament, Halys had struggled for most of 2026, just as he had throughout his career. He had a career record of 61-100 before the Generali Open. Now, he has a title to his name that no one can ever take away.
