Madison Keys had a tournament to remember at this year's Australian Open, taking out the top two seeds on her way to winning her first Grand Slam singles title. After saving a match point against Iga Swiatek in the semifinals, Keys defeated two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to capture the title.

It was Keys' first Grand Slam final since 2017, where she lost to fellow American Sloane Stephens at the US Open. Keys, 29, became the fourth-oldest first-time Grand Slam champion and is the fifth American woman to win in Australia since 2000.

Unlike the American men, American women have been a dominant presence in their sport in the new century. Including racking up number of Australian Open titles.

American women's Australian Open champions since 2000

Madison Keys: 2025

Madison Keys had one of the best runs of any Grand Slam champion, defeating top player after top player on her way to the 2025 Australian Open title. Keys' incredible tournament included wins over Danielle Collins, Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, Iga Swiatek, and Aryna Sabalenka. Five of her seven matches went to a deciding set, and Keys lost the opening set in two of those matches.

Sofia Kenin: 2020

Like Madison Keys, Sofia Kenin also won her first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. Kenin was just 21 years old at the time of her victory and was the 14th seed at the start of the tournament. Kenin defeated number one seed Ash Barty in the semifinals before coming back from a set down against Garbine Muguruza in the final.

Serena Williams: 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015, 2017

Serena Williams made the Australian Open her home away from home, winning the tournament seven times between 2003 and 2017. In her first and last victories in Australia, Serena defeated her sister, Venus Williams, in the final. Serena won the 2017 Australian Open when she was about eight weeks pregnant with her first daughter.

Jennifer Capriati: 2001, 2002

Jennifer Capriati, born in New York City, won two of her three Grand Slam singles titles at the Australian Open. Capriati's first Grand Slam title came at the 2001 Australian Open, defeating number one seed Martina Hingis in the final. A year later, the two would meet again in the final, and once again, Capriati would come out on top to defend her title.

Lindsay Davenport: 2000

After three consecutive wins for Martina Hingis in Australia from 1997-1999, Lindsay Davenport put an end to it in 2000. Davenport defeated the three-time defending champion 6-1, 7-5 in the final, capturing her third Grand Slam singles title. Davenport's victory in 2000 started a stretch of four consecutive years of having an American winning the Australian Open.
