Instead of Netflix running a docuseries called Aaron Rodgers: Enigma, maybe the streamer should do one on Emma Raducanu. True, the tennis player does not have the same kind of drama away from her sport - she is not outspokenly anti-vaccine, for instance - but she still has been a fairly divisive figure. Her critics have pointed out that she seems more likely to care about sponsorships than her tennis form.
That may all be true and unfounded. We do not really know. The reason is that the Brit has been injured so much over the last few years that we don't really know how good she can consistently be. She won the US Open in 2021, and that remains the only title in her career.
Of course, even with the injuries, the criticism has not subsided. Maybe she did not mind taking the time away from the sport to rehab because that left more time to mime for endorsements, some might think. Raducanu, though, wants people to know her truth. She recently said as much to The Sun.
Emma Raducanu makes a confession and John McEnroe has a take on Andy Roddick
She told the website, "I’m obviously very grateful and fortunate to have had certain experiences and opportunities but I wasn’t prepared for the other things that inevitably do take some energy out of you...I think now I’m a lot more structured. I’ll be like: ‘OK, I have this time where one hour we will talk about business. And now I’m going to go train for the rest of the week’."
In funnier news, ATP legend John McEnroe recently espoused his thoughts on Served with Andy Roddick on Andy Murray becoming Novak Djokovic's coach for the Australian Open. He did so, however, in a very tongue-in-cheek way. In other words, in a very John McEnroe way.
Still, McEnroe is rooting a bit for Djokovic-Murray to win in Melbourne because he believes it would be good for the global brand of tennis. He is right. More people will pay attention because of the draw of the two greats working together. If Djokovic flames out in the third or fourth round, the drama ends. Otherwise, tennis fans have a show to watch.
About Murray's decision to coach the Serb, McEnroe had a funnier take. He said, "He’s got four kids, I’ve got six kids. So he is like… ‘I need a break!'"
