Tennis News: Emma Raducanu issues threat and Coco Gauff gives away the farm

Emma Raducanu has been an oft-injured player for the last few seasons. She might be the most overhyped and overrated player in history. She is constantly a focus of "will-she" or "won't-she" play in a certain tournament. This is the case even though she has only won one title in her career, though that was an important one.

She won the 2021 US Open in a run that consisted of Raducanu not playing any top-ten players. It was an odd year. Still, she defeated everyone in her path to the Grand Slam victory and no one else could say that in 2021.

Even though she has a career-high rank of No. 10 and has made it past the fourth round only three times in her 24 combined Grand Slam and Masters 1000 events, she felt compelled recently to issue a warning to the rest of the WTA field for the 2025 season.

Speaking with Women's Health Magazine, Raducanu said, "I’ve matured a lot in the last few weeks, to be honest...I take confidence from doing things that really enrich my mind and body and how peaceful I feel. I’m prepared to work hard and do some damage next year."

Is she? That seems like a stretch for a player who has never beaten players such as Coco Gauff, Aryna Sabalenka, or Elena Rybakina. Maybe Raducanu needs to win another tournament before she starts suggesting to others that she is a threat to take titles from them.

Speaking of Gauff, she recently had an accidental slip of the tongue - and a funny one - at the Wuhan Open. During the event, Gauff unsurprisingly qualified for the WTA Finals in early November. The problem was that even though she knew that, she wasn't supposed to say anything (even though - and let's be real - her qualification was obvious).

The WTA likes to have an interview with players after they qualify for the year-end finals and have accrued enough points to participate. The interview can take a few days to set up, so in the meantime, there is no official announcement of qualification. It's all quite silly.

At the Wuhan Open, when speaking with the media, Gauff said, "I saw that I qualified on the ranking race. Oops, they said they didn't announce it yet. If you look it up online, there's a checkmark by my name. They told me not to say anything. Sorry."

Tennis fans knew Gauff would qualify, so there was no drama that she wouldn't. Plus, her apology makes for a more magical moment than some boring process of lining up an interview.
