Holger Rune has flashed an ability to win at a high level. The issue is that he seemingly has been too arrogant at times to change how he approaches making any changes to his game. If one needs proof of this, simply watch the Netflix series Break Point and see how Rune interacts with people.
He has acted as if he is a multi-time Grand Slam champion instead of one who has fallen down the ATP rankings and currently sits at number 13. Rune is now 21 years old and has watched as Carlos Alcaraz, who is the same age, has won four majors and reached No. 1. The Dane seems far behind Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who is only 23.
He might be rethinking his image and his ability to accept coaching, though. In a recent interview with Tennis365, Rune admitted he had made mistakes in his career. He also confessed that he knew he had not been playing good tennis. He is working through all of that.
Holger Rune gets honest and Jimmy Connors talks Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic
Rune said, "I have always believed in myself, but over the last one and a half years, I haven’t put the right work in...I can only blame myself because the decisions were all made by me. Every coach I’ve had and every person I’ve had has done the best they can do for my tennis, but it needs to fit the person and I think it’s really, really personal to have the right people."
One player who never appeared to struggle with self-confidence was Jimmy Connors. He has turned that mentality into a fantastic podcast called Advantage Connors. The pod is a must-listen for any fan of tennis.
He recently espoused his opinion about Novak Djokovic hiring Andy Murray as his coach in the Australian Open. Connors, of course, has a unique perspective on the union because the American played tennis for decades and understands the ebb and flow of the sport. Connors also knows that as Djokovic closes in on the end of his career, he wants people around him he feels comfortable with.
Connors said, "I think it enters a comfort zone. They have competed against each other, they know each other’s game, they have spent time together – not only on the court, playing great matches – but also off the court. There comes a point in time in your later years where, if you feel comfortable and feel relaxed with the people around you, that allows you to go out and attempt to play your best tennis and give it your all."
The hope of many tennis fans is that Murray can help motivate Djokovic to win his 11th Australian Open title. We do not want to see the Serb slowly fade away; we want to see him maintain a high level of form.
