Way too early Miami Open exit forces Iga Swiatek to brutally reflect

She's down, but to great to be out.

It wasn't long ago that Iga Świątek captured the Miami Open title in 2022, which would lead to her eventually becoming the No. 1-ranked player on the WTA Tour for much of that year. Świątek has been the gold standard of how to play tennis at the top for five years, despite what just happened in Miami.

In the round of 64, Świątek went up against Magda Linette, a former top-20 player, and took the first set 6-1, but would drop the last two 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 10 minutes in total time. It was one of Świątek's most disappointing losses in some time.

The loss also snapped Świątek's remarkable 73-opening-match win streak since 2021. The aftermath of this loss rocked the tennis world, but it rocked Świątek as well. That said, she's too great a player not to bounce back, but that doesn't mean she's not feeling it right now.

Every great player has bad matches, and Świątek just suffered one of her worst in a long time. She's been nothing but dominant since her ascent on the WTA Tour several years ago, accounting for six Grand Slam titles, and going undefeated every time; she's never lost a major final.

In Miami, Świątek was expected to make a run, as she does in almost every event she plays in, but Linette cut that bid short, and now Świątek is left with the uncomfortable position of personal reflection, which she spoke to following her loss to Linette.

“I feel like I have expectations of myself that I can’t fulfil. I need to let go of them," Świątek admitted. “I’m not good enough to have any expectations. Everybody knows I have a game to win tournaments. I just haven’t been showing that. I’m kind of facing things that I never faced because I never felt things that intensely on court. I mean, I did, but I was much younger, and it felt like a normal process. Now it doesn’t.”

Most athletes get harped on for spoutting disengenious comments or "sports talk" in the locker room — those cliché responses that athletes are supposed to say. Świątek's comments go completely against that flow.

The transparent vulnerability is a breath of fresh air, especially when it comes from someone as great as Świątek. Whatever she needs to do to come back from this, there's no doubt Świątek will do it. She's too great to stay down. Don't be surprised if she comes back from this stronger than ever and gets back to her dominating ways.

So far this year, Świątek has zero titles but has plenty of time and opportunity to regain her form as the season progresses. Fans should expect to see her next at the Stuttgart Open in April, marking the start of the clay court season.
