Serena Stays on Top!

The WTA rankings always make for interesting viewing after a Grand Slam tournament. Now that the Australian Open is done and dusted, let’s see what the top 10 on the WTA rankings look like after two weeks down under.

1 Serena Williams (No change)

She came, she saw, she conquered. Going into the Australian Open, Serena’s number 1 ranking was in jeopardy but considering she lost in the 4th round last year, her title winning performance has enabled her to extend her lead  in the number 1 position comfortably.

2 Maria Sharapova (No change)

Going into the Australian Open, Maria had a chance to take the number 1 ranking. Like Serena, Maria lost in the 4th round last year so has made a substantial gain in reaching the final.  For now though and at least for the foreseeable future, Maria must accept sitting in the shadow of Serena Williams.

3 Simona Halep (No change)

Halep also had a chance of becoming number 1 during the Australian Open but disappointed with a nervy exit in the quarter finals to Ekaterina Makarova. However, as she equalled her showing from last year, she remains a solid number 3.

4 Petra Kvitova (No change)

The Wimbledon champ was the only other player to have a remote chance of stealing the top spot after the event. Sadly, she was out powered in the 3rd round by the eventual semi finalist Madison Keys. Amazingly though, she lost in the 1st round last year so has actually picked up points from the Australian Open and stays at number 4.

5 Caroline Wozniacki (Up 3)

The ever popular Dane was unlucky in Melbourne, losing out to the deceptively low ranked Victoria Azarenka in the 2nd round. Despite failing to equal her 3rd round showing last year, the fall of other players sees Caroline back inside the top 5 for the first time since 2012.

6 Ana Ivanovic (Down 1)

The Australian Open turned into a nightmare for Ana as she lost in the 1st round to qualifier Lucie Hradecka. Considering she had a sensational run to the quarters last year at Serena’s expense, it’s no surprise she’s suffered a setback in the rankings.

7 Eugenie Bouchard (No change)

Though Eugenie didn’t equal her semi final showing from last year, a respectable quarter final loss to Maria Sharapova means she hangs tight at number 7.

8 Agnieszka Radwanksa (Down 2)

Radwanska looked good for a while in Melbourne, before Venus Williams swatted her aside in the 4th round. Therefore, she loses points after appearing in last year’s semis.

9 Ekaterina Makarova (Up 2)

A dark horse if ever there was one, Ekaterina Makarova galloped through to her 2nd successive Grand Slam semi final just a couple of weeks or so after cracking the top 10 for the first time. Taking out Halep en route, her improvement on last year’s 4th round defeat sees her crack a career high.

10 Angelique Kerber (Down 1)

The German has been living on the edge for sometime now as her form is constantly wavering. Her strange 1st round defeat to Irina Camelia Begu was her worst Grand Slam showing since Wimbledon 2011. As she made the 4th round last year, she loses a number of points which sees her on the brink of falling outside the top 10 for the first time since 2012.
