ATP Race Rankings: 18th May, Federer makes charge

As we approach the half way stage of the year, the ATP Race standings are more relevant than ever. With the clay court season coming to a close at the French Open next week, the points gained over the last month have caused some major changes inside the Top 20.

Players will be eyeing up Roland Garros as a chance to put the cherry on top of their first half of the season, with a significant amount of points up for grabs. Whilst the ATP Race does not affect the seedings for events, we are beginning to see roughly where players will end up in the year end rankings.

For a full run through of how the Race rankings are calculated and how they differ from the official ATP rankings, see here.

Novak Djokovic continues to extend his lead at the top of the Race and is essentially already assured of a spot at the World Tour Finals in London. Strong performances at the French Open and Wimbledon may even help him secure the year end world number one ranking.

David Ferrer and Roger Federer were the two men to make good ground at the Rome Masters, with Ferrer rising to as high as fourth in the standings, suggesting he may well still have a place inside the Top 10. In contrast, Milos Raonic won’t be add to his current Race total as he has been ruled out for a few months with injury.

More from ATP

Guillermo Garcia Lopez has made huge strides in 2015 and on current form he will be knocking on the door of the Top 10 by the end of the year. The same goes for John Isner, who has looked like a new player in recent weeks and will hope for a favourable draw in Paris.

On his return from a ban, Viktor Troicki looks to be more motivated than ever as he joins a number of surprise names inside the Top 20. It is all very bunched up around the Serb in the ATP Race standings which places even more importance in the next few weeks in Paris.

Selected Others

Nick Kyrgios had exceeded many peoples expectations on the clay so far this season and has risen to number 25 in the Race. Once he has notched up a full season’s worth of tournaments his ranking will be seriously impressive. Fellow Aussie youngster Thanasi Kokkinakis is also on the up and up, sitting at 48th in the Race.

British number two Alijaz Bedene has made a strong start playing for his new country and at 39th in the Race he will be hard to ignore when it comes to the Davis Cup quarter final squad selection. Kyle Edmund is the next highest Brit in the Race standings at 81, with Davis Cup first round hero James Ward languishing in 189th.
