Wimbledon 2015 – Day One Highlights
Performance Of The Day
Day one at Wimbledon saw two women who complete double bagel wins. Venus Williams and Andrea Petkovic got the better of Madison Brengle and Shelby Rogers respectively for the loss of no games.
However, it is Petkovic who claims this award due to the fact that she completed her rout three minutes faster than the American did.
To defeat a top 100 player in the first round of a Grand Slam without dropping a game is a remarkably impressive feat, and the German is showing signs of getting back to her best form if this result is anything to go by.
It will only get harder for Petkovic from here on in, but she has opened her tournament in perfect fashion.
Match Of The Day
Wimbledon without Lleyton Hewitt just won’t feel the same will it?
It was announced before the competition began that this would be the Aussie’s last appearance at SW19, and unfortunately for him and his legion of vociferous followers, his five set classic against Jarkko Nieminen was to be his final match at the All England Club.
Hewitt twice lead by a set but ended up losing out in a thrilling 20 game fifth to wave goodbye to a tournament he won back in 2002.
A five set rollercoaster in which he exhibited all the fighting qualities he has been become famous for – he may not appreciate it now, but Lleyton Hewitt managed to make a romantic and fitting farewell to the pristine Wimbledon grounds.

Does the name Jelena Ostapenko mean anything to you? It may not at the moment, but if her performance in her first ever Grand Slam match was anything to go by, you will be hearing a lot more of her in the future.
The 18-year-old from Latvia showed no signs of nerves in her first ever match in a major in perhaps the most prestigious competition in the sport, taking out world number nine Carla Suarez Navarro for the loss of just two games.
Suarez Navarro may not be completely at home on grass, but she is currently in the form of her life and has more than enough experience to deal with a teenager playing her first match in a Slam.
That’s why it is all the more impressive that Ostapenko defeated her Spanish opponent in less than an hour on her way through to the second round in London – the teenager is one to keep an eye on in the near future, no doubt.
One To Look Forward To
The early rounds at Wimbledon have thrown up some absolutely nightmare encounters for two-time champion Rafael Nadal, with early exits coming in the last three years to lower ranked players.
Three years ago Nadal faced Tomaz Bellucci in the first round at the All England Club, and he had to recover from a 4-0 deficit in the first set before eventually triumphing in straights.
We all know what happened in the next round when Lukas Rosol was on the other side of the net.
With the Spaniard’s confidence and form seemingly on the wane all the time and with the scarcely believable fact that he is seeded tenth for this tournament doing nothing to aid his cause, this first round looks potentially hazardous for Nadal.
Bellucci is a dangerous player with lots of weapons on this surface, and this one should be more than a stroll in the park for the world number ten, or so the neutrals would hope, anyway.
