Wimbledon 2015 – Day Two Highlights

Performance Of The Day

Angelique Kerber may have offered up the third double bagel result of the women’s competition on Tuesday, but performance of the day honours go to Petra Kvitova for day two at Wimbledon.

The defending champion came into London with a lot of pressure on her shoulders, but she dealt with it admirably as she brushed aside Kiki Bertens for the loss of just one game.

The Czech wrapped matters up in just 35 minutes and amazingly dropped just one point on her serve in the entire match, that being a double fault.

The two-time winner progresses through to the second round at the All England Club with her confidence sky high.

Match Of The Day

Home favourite Heather Watson cannot have had a sound night’s sleep when her head hit the pillow on Monday.

Her match with Caroline Garcia had been controversially held overnight due to bad light, with the scores level at one set apiece.

Garcia had easily taken the first set, but Watson hit back in the second to level matters, and confusingly agreed to a seemingly premature postponement of the match due to the fading light.

However, the woman from Guernsey came out with all guns blazing in a dramatic third set, failing to serve matters out at 6-5 before eventually triumphing 8-6 in a tense decider.

Shock Of The Day

There are a couple of contenders for this category, as Jack Sock went out in the men’s tournament, while third seed Simon Halep was sent packing on the women’s side.

However, it is the first round exit of last year’s runner-up Eugenie Bouchard that really caught the eye on Tuesday.

It is true that the Canadian is having a woeful season, but to go out in straight sets to the world number 117 is still a massive shock to the system given her grass court pedigree and previous experience at SW19.

Ying-Ying Duan had only contested four Grand Slam matches before this one, losing on every occasion, so with all this in mind the 25-year-old held her nerve superbly to advance to the next round.

A temporary blip is quickly turning into more of a terminal problem – where next for Eugenie Bouchard?

One To Look Forward To

Nick Krygios is the name on everyone’s lips at the All England Club after his breakthrough year in 2014.

The 20-year-old dealt with the pressure nicely in the first round, despite a lengthy quarrel with the umpire at one point, defeating the dogged Diego Schwartzman in straight sets to get his campaign underway.

Tomorrow brings a new challenge for the Australian young gun however, as the talented Juan Monaco awaits, with the Argentinian sure to present a stern test before hopes can turn to reaching the second week once more.

Can Kyrgios keep his temper and set up a potential blockbuster meeting with Milos Raonic? Or will he implode and make an underwhelming exit? Either way, it will be fun finding out.
