There was no upset pulled off by Spain’s Garbine Muguruza at Wimbledon Saturday. The young up and coming powerhouse played like one of the world’s best adding another victory to her record. The marathon fight she had against Angelique Kerber was one for the books winning 7-6(12), 6-1, 6-2 on Court Two at the All England Club.

The German has the Spaniard well in control over their history against each other, but the current outcome at the French Open still lingers over her head. The up and coming Spanish star has been a force that many seemed unable to deal with. Muguruza defeated Kerber in the third round at Roland Garros n a huge victory that no one saw possible.

The 21 year old came into 2015 defeating some of the biggest names in the sport that has her sitting 20th in the WTA rankings. With her doubles experience helping her out through the first two majors, her play in the third is one to worry on as Kerber will assuredly remember at the start of the match.

More from Majors

The German made the opening rush to get ahead as she found a way to respond on Muguruza’s shots. Kerber took a two game lead holding off the Spaniard as indications showed her warming up to compete. Despite the great effort in Game Three, Kerber took her third straight to open the gap against a tough opponent.

Frustrations grew to a hilt for Muguruza as her battle to get on the board was being stopped by the German. She somehow fought her way from 0-40 to force deuce and win on the break. Muguruza made it a one game margin between herself and Kerber as the 21 year old closed the gap causing the German a little concern.

As Kerber found a way to keep pace, the Spaniard answered by stealing her chance to take a two game lead and stay right on her after eight games and no sign of a winner. The German took the lead after nine as her strategy to play defense against Muguruza’s serve would give her the win. It didn’t go that way as the Spaniard served up shots that were incapable of being returned on the rally causing the set to go on.

After four breaks on deuce in the eleventh game, Kerber took the lead for the last time as her work on court was continuing to find her way to hold back Muguruza. The problem arrived when the serve returned in hands of the youngster from Barcelona who made Kerber go far and beyond to earn points. The German forced deuce where after ten breaks and 15 and a half minutes of play, Muguruza swiped away the win to move into a tiebreaker.

The two opened up with a 33 shot rally where Kerber took the opening lead on a shot hit outside the line. Muguruza answered with a point that turned the tiebreak into a battle. 14 points were split between the two as no one could see an end in sight. A winner was decided after 17 minutes and 26 points combined where Muguruza was the one on top winning the set that took 1 hour and 23 minutes to finish.

  • After playing such a physical set, the two players still had more tennis in front of them with Muguruza in control. She broke after two on deuce to take the opening lead of the second set hoping to take the German out of the match. It was not the case as Kerber held serve in Game Two to get on level terms early.

She opened up a 3-1 lead on the Spaniard attempting to push for a win in the match. It looked as if Muguruza’s game disappeared as she was denied from winning another game. Kerber broke out to a six game winning streak in what was looking to be an end to the Spaniard’s energy on court.

Muguruza opened the third set with a win in the first game that woke up Kerber to play hard as the set was on the line. The two remained tied until the fifth when Muguruza took control back to her end. The aces were working well for the Spaniard as she gained ground against Kerber landing her seventh in the match that gave her a 4-2 lead.

She wasted no more time fighting Kerber as the 21 year old got into position to take the match away. She got into one final deuce in the eighth game where a shot that hit the line was challenged showing that the ball caught the line ending the 2 hour and 34 minute bout.

The victory was no fluke as Muguruza played a terrific game on court where her serve is one that many will want to figure out how to be successful against. In total, Muguruza had 57 winners and seven aces in her win over Kerber as it was the clear dominance that sets her up for a fourth round match. With the day off, Muguruza will try and keep the amazing run alive facing Caroline Wozniacki on Monday.
