Wimbledon 2015 – Day Six Highlights

Performance Of The Day

Timea Bacsinszky is quietly building on her impressive showing at Roland Garros last month and continued her fine form on Saturday at Wimbledon.

Sabine Lisicki is a player who has previous at this tournament, with the German reaching the final two years ago and beating some big names at SW19 in recent times.

However, Bacsinszky didn’t let the German’s reputation at this tournament affect her as she romped to a 6-3, 6-2 victory to advance to the fourth round.

The world number 15 is not grabbing many headlines at the moment, but no one can argue with the form she is showing.

Match Of The Day

Gilles Simon and Gael Monfils are good friends on and off the court and share a lot of attributes, but they are almost compete opposites as far as style of play is concerned.

The former is steady and consistent, with an uncanny ability to break his opponents’ strengths down, while the latter relies on his huge serve and forehand to get the job done more often than not.

This contrast in styles made for a fascinating watch on Saturday, with the two Frenchmen competing for a spot in the round of 16 at the All England Club.

In the end it was the consistency of Simon that won out, with the 12th seed taking an epic encounter 6-2 in the fifth set.

Shock Of The Day

Jelena Jankovic is a former world number one and Grand Slam finalist, but not many gave her a chance going into her third round clash with Petra Kvitova.

Kvitova was the defending champion, a two-time winner of Wimbledon and the Czech had looked imperious on her way to the last-32.

However, after trailing by a set and a break, the Serbian sunk her teeth into the contest, with her defensive prowess from the baseline proving too much for her opponent, as she ran out a 6-4 victor in the decider.

Jankovic was replicating some of the form that took her to the world number one spot, and if she can keep it up a maiden major title may not seem too farfetched.

One To Look Forward To

The prospect of the Williams sisters playing against each other at Wimbledon is always a mouthwatering one, and Monday will throw that particular match-up our way in the fourth round.

Normally the crowd at SW19 is used to seeing Serena and Venus go toe to toe on the final Saturday, with the two contesting four finals against each other at the All England Club.

Serena has won three of those encounters, with Venus the victor the solitary time they met in the semis in London.

The 20-time Slam winner has said that her elder sister is in better form coming into this match, and it will no doubt be intriguing to see if Venus can steal some of the limelight away from her.
