Caroline Wozniacki became another victim of the Spanish assassin of tennis. Garbine Muguruza used her high leveled natural talents to defeat the fifth seed Dane 6-4, 6-4 at Wimbledon in another stunning upset on Court Two Monday.

The fourth round sees its two strongest competitors go at it in a name that many know against a young lady who is coming out of nowhere. The 21 year old Spaniard has been on fire since the start of the season becoming the strongest from Spain since Carla Suarez Navarro. With her huge fight against Angelique Kerber Saturday, Muguruza looked to threaten others in their quest for glory at Wimbledon.

More from Majors

Wozniacki has lost two of three against the Spaniard winning against her at Tokyo that went to its brink where she pulled off a big third set to win. With her capability of changing her strategy in dire situations, the Dane can’t be written off yet.

Wozniacki opened the first game with a break of serve against Muguruza but faltered on her own shot the Spaniard allowing her to force deuce and tie the set. The two got into a fight over wins tying things up at three until the 21 year old took the lead on a break point where a lob from Wozniacki landed away from the baseline.

She took the next game holding serve until the Dane fired back with a love service in Game Nine to come within tying the set. The Spaniard pushed hard while on service in Game Ten where she clawed back to force deuce and take the game on a quick break ending the set in 39 minutes. While Wozniacki clearly had the stronger serve, it was the young Spanish star that did well on response to her shots as well as her net approach strategy that gave her 10 of 13 points on her attempts.

  • The second set was one that Wozniacki needed to make hers to win as her loss in the second was no fluke playing against Muguruza. She opened up a two game lead on the Spaniard until she was able to find her niche to strike on the scoreboard. She tied it up before getting into a fight on deuce in the fifth game where the Dane held after three breaks on deuce regaining the lead.

Each time the Dane took the lead, it was Muguruza who had the energy to rally back and play on in a tie. It went on for eight games where the Spaniard got ahead at a key moment to put Wozniacki on the verge of elimination. She took Game Nine with a triple break point that devastated the Danish superstar.

Muguruza played one final game where her battle on deuce paid off where she landed a brilliant ace to shut the door and defeat another big named player on court. Though the set took 53 minutes to complete, the fight that Muguruza had in her favor was something no one could quite understand.

One thing that was sure in the eyes of the tennis world was that the 21 year old would continue to challenge anyone that stood in her way. Next up in the quarterfinals would be Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky who has been dangerous while playing deep into tournaments. Whether she’ll be the factor to end the power of Spain’s last hope in the ladies draw will be in the spotlight for all to see.
