5.
Serena Williams vs Heather Watson (3rd Round)- This match had everything! The undisputed world number one, bidding for her 4th successive Grand Slam against the un-seeded British underdog. After the first set flew by in favour of Williams, the writing seemed to be on the wall.

However, no one could have anticipated how quickly the match would turn and how Watson would channel the crowd’s energy to very nearly cause one of the most significant Wimbledon upsets ever. Not only did she win the second set, but go up a double break at 3-0, with a point for 4-0 in the third.

At this point, she had Williams running all over the place with deep returns and surprising drop shots. She even served for the match at 5-4 and at deuce was just two points away from the win.

In the crisis, perhaps a lack of experience, combined with Serena’s famed desire to win caused her to falter and lose 62 46 75 but there was no doubt in my mind that for the pure unexpected drama that this match created, it was certainly the best match of the tournament.
