Projected Meeting: Semifinal

Yes, we finally got to see the Williams sisters face off at Wimbledon last month.

No, it didn’t live up to the hype.

The issue with Serena and Venus’ fourth round clash at the All-England Club was that it was evident throughout the entire match that Venus would simply be a footnote in Serena’s historic charge to the title. There were no stakes, as it seemed a given that Serena would win.

Their match in the Rogers Cup semifinal last year, though, was the exact opposite. Serena was, as always, the favourite to win the match and the title.

But Venus obviously had others plans.

With impenetrable service games and fearless groundstrokes, the older Williams sister caused a major upset and ousted her sister in three sets, after dropping the first set in a tiebreak. Granted, Serena wasn’t at her best, but the older Williams sister put on a virtuosic display of power tennis to remind the tennis world that she is still a force to be reckoned with.

Now a year separated from their Canadian clash, Venus and Serena could potentially meet in the same round and at the same site as Venus’ incredible win (okay, it would be in Toronto this time, but it’s the same tournament). Serena will obviously be the favourite in her section of the draw to progress to the semifinals. Meanwhile, Venus’ section of the draw includes an injured Caroline Wozniacki, and slumping Ana Ivanovic, so another semifinal run is conceivable.

If the match were to come to fruition, Serena would almost definitely be hungry to avenge the defeat. And any tennis fan can appreciate how special/ironic that match would be.

(Premature) Prediction: Serena in 3.
