Richard Gasquet – On of the form players of the summer, Gasquet would also have been expected to trouble Roger Federer more than he did. Clearly improving with age when it comes to winning matches against lower ranked opponents, he needs a spark to help him to a big scalp.

Stan Wawrinka – We know that Wawrinka is going to produce his best at the majors no matter how poor he has been for the rest of the year. He put himself in with a shot of a third Grand Slam title, but couldn’t find a level that could trouble Roger Federer.

Marin Cilic – Cilic has an incredible record at the US Open and a semi final run is not to be sniffed at. He used too much energy in the previous rounds to have enough in the tank to trouble Novak Djokovic, although I would not bet against him winning another US Open one day.
