Angelique Kerber remains in the world No. 2 position as she is upset at the Dubai Tennis Championships. Caroline Wozniacki, however, continues winning and advances to the finals.

Angelique Kerber struggled in her semifinals match at the WTA Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.

The world No. 2 dropped her semifinals match in straight sets to 22-year-old Ukrainian tennis player, Elina Svitolina. Kerber misses a chance to fully redeem herself after her early exit in Doha last week.

Svitolina defeats Kerber 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

The Ukrainian tennis player is the current world No. 13 in women’s singles tennis. She now faces former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in a finals match at the Dubai Tennis Championships.

Wozniacki is playing fantastic tennis as of late. Last week in Doha, Wozniacki reached the finals at the Qatar Total Open. Since mid 2016, the Dane has risen in the rankings, now sitting in the world No. 15 position. A win in Dubai could put Wozniacki on track to break back into the top 10 in women’s singles tennis in the near future.

Until the semifinals match with Svitolina, Kerber had not dropped a single set at the Dubai Tennis Championships. The Ukrainian tennis player appears to have Angelique Kerber’s number, having won the last three meetings between the two. The finals match with Wozniacki will be a great test for Svitolina who also won a title at the Taiwan Open last month. She and Wozniacki both are eyeing positions in the top 10 in the coming weeks. Svitolina could break into the top 10 with a win over Wozniacki.

As for Kerber, the loss stalls her in the world No. 2 position. It also seems as though a lingering knee issue may have contributed to her inability to close against Svitolina. Angelique Kerber will need to recover and refocus after her semifinals loss.
