Monica Puig is the current world No. 42. She made headlines when she won the Olympic gold medal in women’s singles tennis in 2016. Here’s how her 2017 is shaping up so far.

Monica Puig is hoping to be considered among the best in women’s singles tennis.

The 23-year-old Puerto Rican tennis player has had an up and down two months to start her 2017 WTA Tour. Here’s how her first few tournaments played out.

Puig started her season in Brisbane. She saw an early exit at the tournament. An unfortunate draw pit Puig up against the now world No. 10 Elina Svitolina.

The Ukrainian tennis player took the match in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.

Next up was Sydney, where Puig found herself matched up against Svitolina yet again. This time around, however, Svitolina had to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. Puig ended up in a match against former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki.

Wozniacki took the match 6-3, 2-6, 6-4. The back-to-back early exits were stifling to Puig in the first weeks of the year.

Next was the Australian Open where Puig advanced in straight sets into the second round. Her opening round match saw her losing just a single game before being knocked out in the next round.

February brought the Qatar Total Open where Monica Puig came into her own. The Puerto Rican tennis player cruised into a semifinals match with Wozniacki. The Dane would take the match, winning in straight sets. The tournament, however, was a step in the right direction for Puig.

Puig would win two matches in Dubai before dropping a round of 16 match to world No. 2 Angelique Kerber. It would prove to be another strong tournament overall for Puig.

Now, she finds herself at the 2017 Mexican Open. Puig is the No. 4 seed at the tournament and faces Italian tennis player Francesca Schiavone. Puig is 6-5 to start her season through the month of February. Stay tuned to see how she fares at the Mexican Open.
