She defeats Angelique Kerber in a three-set match. The Russian takes the match 6-4 2-6 6-1.

The tournament became Kerber’s first finals appearance in 2017. Despite coming up short of the title, the week is a step forward for the world No. 1. Kerber has seen some success in both Dubai and again in Miami, but was yet to reach a final.

While the world No. 1 surged to take a second set, Pavlyuchenkova did not relent. She found her rhythm in the third and cruised through the final set.

The 25-year-old Russian tennis player is approaching her highest ever singles ranking. With a win at Monterrey, she gains her first title of the year. Pavlyuchenkova did advance to the quarterfinals at both Sydney and at the Australian Open. She also reached the quarterfinals at Indian Wells just a few weeks ago. The win at Monterrey provides the young tennis player with some much needed momentum.

Women’s singles tennis is shaping up to be exciting in 2017. Several young players such as Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova are taking early titles on the WTA Tour. Kerber and other top players in women’s singles will need to prove that they can maintain the top rankings moving forward.
