Simona Halep ends 2017 WTA Tour as world No. 1

Simona Halep ends her 2017 WTA Tour on a high note. The Romanian tennis star is the year-end world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis.

Simona Halep is the year-end world No. 1 in women’s singles tennis.

Rising to the ranking recently, Halep holds on, ending her year on a high note. She has seen consistent success throughout the year, including a WTA singles title in Madrid.

Despite splashing out of the round robin stage of the WTA Finals in her third match, Halep can rest assured that her 2017 was a success. While a win in Singapore would have been big for the Romanian, she has remained the world No. 1 on the WTA Tour for the final month of the season.

Simona Halep will undoubtedly be a favorite to win a Grand Slam title in 2018.

The world No. 1 finished runner-up at this year’s French Open. To date, it was her best Grand Slam singles finish throughout her career. Look for Halep to be a top contender in the major tournaments next year. She has the experience and skillsets necessary to win a major tournament on the WTA Tour.

Halep is the first Romanian woman to earn the year-end world No. 1 honor. She is also the 25th woman to achieve the ranking in general. After reaching the finals at the 2017 China Open in early October, Simona Halep earned the top ranking. She has retained the world No. 1 position since then and will come into 2018 as the player to beat.

Action in Singapore concluded with Caroline Wozniacki earning the WTA Finals title. She defeats American tennis veteran Venus Williams in straight sets. Williams is a former champion at the end of year tournament. Wozniacki earns her first ever title at the WTA Finals.

Simona Halep has 15 career WTA singles titles to her name. That is on top of another 6 ITF singles titles. At just 26-years-old, the Romanian tennis star has revealed herself to be one of the best in the sport. She is beyond deserving of the year-end world No. 1 ranking.
