After splashing out of Wimbledon, Wawrinka failed to compete in any following ATP events. As the 2016 US Open men’s singles champion, it was a great disappointment to both him and tennis fans alike.

Stan Wawrinka earned a 2017 ATP singles title at the Geneva Open.

Playing in his home country of Switzerland, the tennis star made it back-to-back titles at the ATP tournament. He defeated German tennis veteran Mischa Zverev in a three-set thriller. Wawrinka took the title, winning 4–6, 6–3, 6–3.

The biggest moment of the Swiss tennis star’s year came at Roland-Garros. Reaching the finals at the Grand Slam tournament, Wawrinka fell to Rafael Nadal. The Spanish superstar earned his 10th career title at the event, winning 6–2, 6–3, 6–1. Wawrinka’s run at Roland-Garros, however, was fantastic. Throughout the tournament he defeated the likes of Fabio Fognini, Gael Monfils, Marin Cilic, and Andy Murray among others. As the 2015 men’s singles champion at Roland-Garros, Wawrinka showed just how comfortable he is at the French Open.

In March of 2017, Wawrinka also tasted a finals appears at Indian Wells. The big name tournament is one where the Swiss star put on another fine display of tennis throughout the week. There, Federer would again best him despite Wawrinka nearly mounting a comeback in the second set. Overall, Stan Wawrinka’s 2017 ATP World Tour can be viewed as a success. It is disappointing to see the three-time Grand Slam champion out due to injury, similar to the likes of Djokovic, Andy Murray, and others. We can rest assured, however, that Wawrinka will be back and competing amongst the best in men’s singles tennis in early 2018. Stay tuned to see how he fares in the coming year.
