By Harry Floyd
The Mallorca Open sees its top seed Caroline Garcia upset in the quarterfinals. Her loss reveals the immense amount of talent currently on tour.
Caroline Garcia was the top seed this week at the Mallorca Open. The French tennis star also entered the action as a former champion at the WTA Tour event. As the current world number six, Garcia is among the best in women’s singles tennis right now.
Sofia Kenin completes the upset. She enters the semifinals at the Mallorca Open, defeating Garcia in straight sets. Kenin wins the match 6-3 6-3. The young American tennis star continues to raise her profile on the WTA Tour, reaching career heights as she does so. Kenin faces off against German tennis veteran Tatjana Maria next.

The other semifinals match features the defending champion in Anastasija Sevastova. She takes on Samantha Stosur at the Mallorca Open. Looking at the Garcia upset though, there is plenty to take away from the outcome. While Garcia herself is atop the rankings in women’s singles tennis and is a rising star on the WTA Tour, she is not dominant. In fact, there are few, if any, who are.
Even French Open champion Simona Halep is beatable. Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki is another top player on tour. Veterans Angelique Kerber or Petra Kvitova are making strong comebacks. Women’s singles tennis, however, is featuring contenders from all angles.
Veteran greats and young stars are clashing on the WTA Tour right now. Caroline Garcia and Sofia Kenin are just two of the dozens of players making deep tournament runs any chance they get. Wimbledon ought to be thrilling this year.

The Kenin wins is considered an upset, but it isn’t out of the ordinary for the past two years. As Wimbledon approaches, defending champion Garbine Muguruza might be one of the players to beat, but so are several others in a long list of names. We are entering a new era in women’s tennis and there is infinite possibility for what the talented players on tour can do. Action rolls on at the 2018 Mallorca Open. The second half of the WTA Tour should present fans and players with some stellar play on the courts.
