Angelique Kerber has reached the semifinals at the 2018 Wimbledon Championships and the German tennis star is now just one of four remaining players in women’s singles.

Angelique Kerber is both a former Australian Open and US Open champion. Winning each of her Grand Slam singles titles in 2016, she also came up just shy of a win at Wimbledon. During the finals in London that year, she fell to American legend Serena Williams in straight sets. Looking beyond Kerber’s upcoming semis match with Jelena Ostapenko, a finals rematch with Williams is a possibility if both she and the American can advance.

The Kerber-Ostapenko matchup might normally be considered a veteran versus an up and comer type of match, but the young Latvian already has tremendous experience under her belt.

Winning the 2017 French Open, Ostapenko shocked the sport by taking down Simona Halep in the finals. She roared back from one set down to ultimately win  4–6, 6–4, 6–3. Her semifinals appearance at Wimbledon marks a career best at the grass court major for Ostapenko. There is no doubt that she will be vying for her second Grand Slam title this week. If she is able to make it happen, she may very well be considered the number one young star in women’s tennis. The sport has seen fantastic young talent emerge an Ostapenko is right there at the forefront.

Angelique Kerber has her work cut out for her with Jelena Ostapenko in the Wimbledon semifinals. The two-time Grand Slam champion is, however, just two wins away from her first title in London. Kerber has the slight edge in the semis.

Ostapenko is yet to drop a single set at Wimbledon thus far. Angelique Kerber has dropped just one. Anything can happen in the semifinals but we must give the German tennis veteran the slight edge. A singles title at the Grand Slam is just two matches away for either player. Semifinals action goes down on Thursday. Stay tuned to see how Kerber fares down the stretch.
