Sloane Stephens: Defending US Open Champion Reaches Quarterfinals
By Harry Floyd
Sloane Stephens is the defending champion in women’s singles tennis at the US Open. She is on yet another fantastic run this year.
American tennis star Sloane Stephens has found her rhythm at the 2018 US Open. Entering the quarterfinals at the grand slam, she is on what could be another championship run. Last year at Flushing Meadows, the young American faced fellow countrywoman Madison Keys in the finals. Stephens would take the championships match, winning 6-3 6-0. This year, Keys also remains alive as of now, taking her round of 16 match in straight sets.
Up next for Stephens is Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia in the quarterfinals.
The defending champion must be considered the heavy favorite throughout the rest of the action at this year’s US Open. Her success so far at the major tournament has included wins over the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Elise Mertens among others. Stephens has dropped just a single set so far during her time at the US Open.
With top seed and current French Open champion Simona Halep splashing out of the play early, Sloane Stephens easily became one of the favorites to take the title. The defending US Open champion continues her success into the quarterfinals at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday.
While Caroline Wozniacki, Halep, and others like Angelique Kerber have dominated the WTA Tour headlines as of late, Sloane Stephens has reentered the conversations. The defending champion is clearly comfortable on the courts at the US Open and she is proving herself at the final grand slam of the calendar year once again. She entered the action in women’s singles as the third seed, but must be considered the top contender for the title from here on out. Check back for updates on the rest of the action at Flushing Meadows and to see if the defending champion and young American tennis star can earn her second career title at the 2018 US Open.
