Simona Halep is the world number one in women’s singles tennis. She has dominated the 2018 WTA Tour while earning her first career grand slam at Roland Garros.

What comes next for Simona Halep? The world number one on the WTA Tour is coming off of a massive upset at the 2018 US Open. After seeing fantastic success throughout the entire year, Halep was thought to be one of the favorites to take the title at Flushing Meadows. She falters, however, dropping out in her opening round match. The Romanian falls to Kaia Kanepi in straight sets, losing 6-2 6-4 to her challenger.

The surprising loss at the US Open should not deter Halep moving forward.

As of writing, the world number one remains atop the rankings and in first place in the Porsche Race to Singapore. Looking at the women’s singles race, Angelique Kerber is in second, Petra Kvitova is in third, and Caroline Wozniacki is in fourth. Other rising stars such as Elina Svitolina and Sloane Stephens are also in the mix. Halep ought to remain the favorite in the race though.

Simona Halep should bounce back easily from her US Open upset. The world number one is poised to be the player to beat at the year end WTA Finals in Singapore.

In 2014, Simona Halep reached the finals in Singapore. Falling to American tennis legend Serena Williams, the Romanian great came up just short of a title. This year, however, Halep ought to remain the favorite heading into action at the WTA Finals. One loss should not throw her off. While she was expected to fare much better at Flushing Meadows, Halep is experienced enough to not let this spiral into anything to worry about. At the French Open this year, the world number one took home her first career grand slam singles title. She has remained consistent throughout the entire 2018 WTA Tour save for a handful of matches and that consistency will continue to pay off as she nears action in Singapore.
