Julia Goerges vs Eugenie Bouchard: Luxembourg Preview
By Harry Floyd
Julia Goerges takes on Canadian Eugenie Bouchard next at the 2018 Luxembourg Open. Here’s a quick look at their upcoming match.
German tennis star Julia Goerges is the top seed and favorite this year at the Luxembourg Open. She is fresh off of a win over the sixth seeded Donna Vekić. Goerges now takes on young Canadian tennis player Eugenie Bouchard in the semifinals. Bouchard has struggled for much of the 2018 WTA Tour but has found herself on quite a hot streak this week in Luxembourg.
While Goerges might normally be considered the heavy favorite in a matchup like this, Bouchard actually has career scoreboard between the two.
That being said, the two tennis players have faced each other just once throughout their careers on the WTA Tour. Their sole meeting came back in 2014 when Bouchard won a hard fought three set match. It was also Genie’s best year to date.
In 2014, she reached as high as the world number five position in women’s singles tennis. She is now eyeing the WTA Top 100 yet again. Lately, Genie has been known for more of her social outings and postings on social media than her game on the courts. This week, however, tennis fans and players alike are seeing the former top five Bouchard return to action. She is displaying brilliant tennis so far at the Luxembourg Open.
Top seed at the Luxembourg Open this year, Julia Goerges plays the role of the favorite in her upcoming meeting with Eugenie Bouchard. The matchup is nothing to take lightly though. Genie is surging this week in Luxembourg and has defeated Goerges in the past.
Bouchard knocked out Timea Babos and then Carla Suarez Navarro before facing German tennis player Andrea Petkovic. The German found herself up one set over Bouchard before having to retire while down 4-0 in the second. Now, Genie has a chance to upset the top seeded Julia Goerges next at the 2018 Luxembourg Open. Stay tuned to see if Genie can remain on her newfound hot streak or if the top seeded Goerges will succeed in reaching the finals. The two square off on Friday at the event.
