German tennis star Angelique Kerber is a former champion in women’s singles at the Australian Open. How will she stack up in 2019?

Angelique Kerber is not the favorite at the upcoming 2019 Australian Open. She is, however, a top contender for the title in women’s singles. A former champion at Melbourne Park, Angie has the experience necessary to make another deep run. She also has tremendous momentum, finishing the 2018 WTA Tour as the world number two in women’s singles tennis.

2016 was a career year for Kerber. She tasted glory at both the Australian Open and the US Open. This past year, she made Grand Slam history yet again, winning the Wimbledon Championships and completing a childhood dream. Here, Kerber reflects on her Wimbledon win.

Looking ahead to the 2019 Australian Open, Kerber is among the top contenders for the title in women’s singles. She may not be the hands down favorite, but Angie is up there. Our pick to win at Melbourne Park is defending champion Caroline Wozniacki. The Danish tennis star won her first career Grand Slam singles title last year at the event.

Angelique Kerber is among the favorites at the 2019 Australian Open.

The only player ahead of Kerber in the women’s singles rankings right now is Romanian great Simona Halep. Angie is a former world number one herself and could touch those career heights again in the near future.

Halep struggled due to injury in the final months of the 2018 WTA Tour but took a title at Roland Garros earlier in the year. The Romanian also reached the finals last year at the Australian Open, falling to Wozniacki in three sets. On the men’s singles side of the action, Roger Federer will look to defend his title at the Australian Open. He will need to contend with so many others such as Novak Djokovic and newfound champion Alexander Zverev.
