Novak Djokovic, Simona Halep named ITF World Champions
By Harry Floyd
Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep end the year atop the men’s and women’s singles rankings and are your ITF World Champions.
Both Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep complete career years in 2018 and deservedly take the ITF World Champion titles. Each year, the International Tennis Federation names a champion in men’s and women’s tennis, emphasizing Grand Slam tournament performance. Djokovic took home two major tournament titles and Halep earned her first ever at the French Open.
As Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal opened the 2018 ATP World Tour as the players to beat, Djokovic had to come out of nowhere to compete. But, he did exactly that.
Djokovic rocketed up the men’s single rankings, returning successfully from lingering injuries to complete back to back Grand Slam runs. Taking a title at the Wimbledon Championships, Nole returned to glory. He followed his London win up with yet another Grand Slam singles title at the US Open. His second half stellar performance also brought him atop the rankings.
Heading into the 2019 ATP World Tour, Djokovic is the top contender in men’s singles tennis. It is an honor to see the ITF name him their 2018 World Champion. Djokovic ties Pete Sampras and passes Federer to earn his sixth end of year ITF World Championship.
Halep, on the other hand, earns her first. The Romanian tennis star finished the year atop the women’s singles rankings on the WTA Tour. Doing so was aided by her first career Grand Slam singles title at the 2018 French Open.
Check back to see how both Novak Djokovic and Simona Halep fare in the coming year. Both tennis stars will be players to watch on the ATP World Tour and the WTA Tour.
