Roger Federer performs extremely well at the Hopman Cup action this week. The Swiss tennis legend is primed and ready for 2019.

The jury is out after Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic’s performances so far at the 2019 Hopman Cup. The two Swiss tennis stars are the defending champions, having defeated Germany’s team of Angelique Kerber and Alexander Zverev last year at the event. Hopman Cup action features round robin play between two groups of four teams.

In his opening singles match, Federer defeats Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie in straight sets, winning 6-1 6-1. It is exactly the start to the year that he’s looking for.

We can officially say that Federer has not slowed down heading into the 2019 ATP Tour. Hopman Cup action features some of the best players in tennis today and Federer is not taking it lightly. He and Bencic, the defending champions, should be considered the favorites or at least among the top teams this week. So far, they are living up to that billing.

Bencic also takes her opening singles match in straights sets. She defeats Katie Boulter, going 6-2 7-6 (7-0) before the pair also took home a win in their mixed doubles match.

Team Germany is also off to a red hot start, defeating Spain 3-0 after wins by both Kerber and Zverev before their mixed doubles victory. The two look to challenge the likes of Federer and Bencic this year. As Hopman Cup action rolls on, players around the world are kicking off play for the 2019 ATP Tour and WTA Tour. The favorite, and Federer’s biggest challenger this year, in men’s singles is world number one Novak Djokovic.

While Federer is off to the start he needs at the Hopman Cup, he will need to keep an eye on Djokovic moving forward. The Serbian tennis star roared back atop the rankings after the middle of 2018 when he won both Wimbledon and the US Open. Now, the two tennis greats move toward play at the Australian Open where they have both seen immense success.
