World number one Novak Djokovic wins his opener at the 2019 Australian Open. Up next for him is a Melbourne Park rematch with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the round of 64.
Novak Djokovic cruises through his opener at the 2019 Australian Open. The world number one has been OUR PICK to win the first Grand Slam of the year for a while now. He is a six-time champion in men’s singles at the event and has taken titles at the two most recent slams. Winning both Wimbledon and the US Open, Djokovic closed out the 2018 ATP Tour as the player to beat.
The world number one defeats American tennis player Mitchell Krueger in his opener at Melbourne Park. He wins their meeting in straight sets, going 6-3 6-3 6-2.
Up next for Djokovic though is a veteran star of the ATP Tour. French tennis player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga meets the world number one for another epic matchup. The two have faced one another plenty of times before throughout their careers. Djokovic has scoreboard, but Tsonga is capable of challenging the Serbian great.
Djokovic and Tsonga meet for a rematch of their prior two AusOpen meetings.
Looking at their career head to head, Djokovic is 16-6 against Tsonga. Back in 2008, Djokovic defeated Tsonga during the Australian Open finals.
They also met during the quarterfinals at Melbourne Park in 2010 where Tsonga took the match in a thrilling five sets. That year, Swiss great and current two-time defending Australian Open champion Roger Federer took the title in men’s singles.
Tsonga enters the matchup with Djokovic this year following a strong opener himself. He defeats Slovak tennis star Martin Kližan in straight sets to setup the showdown with Nole. Tsonga looks to avenge the 2008 finals meeting with the six-time champion. The Frenchman is one of the most experienced players at the major tournament and is arguably one of the best in men’s singles without a Grand Slam singles title to his name.
Stay tuned to see how Novak Djokovic fares against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga during their round of 64 meeting at the 2019 Australian Open. He cannot take the French tennis star for granted. Tsonga is extremely accomplished and is coming off of a strong opening round win at Melbourne Park. Djokovic remains the clearcut favorite at not just the slam, but the rest of the 2019 ATP Tour. He is, however, going up against a highly competitive field of players made up of both veteran greats and rising ATP stars.
