American tennis player Frances Tiafoe completes what just may be the biggest upset so far in men’s singles at the Australian Open.

Reaching the world number 38 ranking last year, Frances Tiafoe made a splash on the ATP Tour. He took home his first career title, winning the Delray Beach Open. Now, the 20-year-old American tennis player is making waves at the 2019 Australian Open.

Tiafoe upsets one of the sport’s hottest players right now in Kevin Anderson. The towering South African tennis veteran entered as the tournament’s fifth seed and was coming off of win at the Tata Open in Pune, India. He is the current world number six in men’s singles tennis.

Anderson won his opener at Melbourne Park in four sets. Knocking out French tennis player Adrian Mannarino, the South African advanced to meet the up and comer in Tiafoe. After one set with the young American, it seemed as though Anderson was continuing his success. Then, the tide turned in favor of Tiafoe.

Tiafoe defeats Anderson in four sets, taking the final three. He reaches the third round at the Australian Open.

Knocking out the fifth seed in the round of 64, Tiafoe defeats Anderson 4-6 6-4 6-4 7-5. He advances into the third round to face Italian veteran Andreas Seppi. While Seppi is an extremely accomplished player, and has taken his first two matches with ease, anything can happen in his matchup with Tiafoe.

The third round Australian Open appearance for Tiafoe is his best to date. He previously reached the third round of play at Wimbledon in 2018 but, still relatively new on the tour, the young American continues to touch career bests. How far can Tiafoe go? He will have a solid chance against Seppi next at Melbourne Park. If he can keep up his current momentum and play like he did against Anderson, the sky is the limit for Tiafoe.
