Defending Australian Open women’s singles champion sets up an anticipated third round meeting with Russian legend Maria Sharapova.
A major story for the third round will be the matchup between defending Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki and Russian great Maria Sharapova. Both win their second round matches with ease in order to advance. Other favorites in women’s singles who sees second round wins include current WTA Finals champion Elina Svitolina, 2018 US Open winner Naomi Osaka, American star Madison Keys, and veteran greats Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova.
Other men’s singles winners include the likes of fourth seeded Alexander Zverev. He is an interesting pick this year, aiming for his first ever Grand Slam singles title. Zverev is the current ATP Finals champion, defeating Djokovic at the O2 Arena in London.
Kei Nishikori, David Goffin, Rafael Nadal, Grigor Dimitrov, and Fabio Fognini are among the other second round winners. For the entire breakdown, visit the Australian Open website for the results. One unexpected second round loser is South Korean Chung Hyeon. He falls to French tennis player Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
Fans hope for a healthy and competitive Stan Wawrinka in 2019. Despite the loss, we will surely see more of him this year.
A clash of two veterans in Stan Wawrinka and Milos Raonic also made for a great match that sets up a meeting with Herbert. It is Raonic, however, who edges Stan the Man, winning in four sets to advance. Both Raonic and Wawrinka are major fan favorites and we hope to see more of them healthy and competing on the 2019 ATP Tour.
Also in the second round action in men’s singles, South African great Kevin Anderson also falls to rising American star Frances Tiafoe. What an upset it was. Read more about their matchup here and keep an eye on Tiafoe moving forward.
