Denis Shapovalov has nothing to lose at the Australian Open
By Harry Floyd
If Denis Shapovalov wants to make history at the 2019 Australian Open, he has to get past world number one Novak Djokovic first.
Third round at the Australian Open features one of the most highly anticipated matchups in men’s singles tennis. Next Generation ATP star Denis Shapovalov faces off against world number one Novak Djokovic. The Serbian great is the favorite, but Shapovalov has a chance to go down in the history books if he can upset the six-time Australian Open men’s singles champion. Can he do it?
Djokovic cannot take the 19-year-old Canadian for granted. Shapovalov cruised through his first two matches at Melbourne Park and has reached the third round for just the first time in his budding career. He will not go away quietly.
Currently, OUR TOP FIVE FAVORITES remain in contention and Djokovic is right at number one on that list. Take a look at the other four picks. Shapovalov has a shot at an upset over the Serbian great though. The biggest reason why… he has nothing to lose.
Denis Shapovalov has nothing to lose against Novak Djokovic.
Djokovic is already proven to be one of the greatest tennis players in the history of the sport. He might very well end up topping the likes of Roger Federer or Serena Williams if he keeps up the current run he is on.
It should also be noted that both Federer and Williams remain in contention currently at the Australian Open. They are capable of taking titles this year too. As for Djokovic, he is on top of the world but Shapovalov is on the way up.
An upset by the young Canadian remains a long shot but it is possible. His explosive offense style of play may hit a wall against the current Wimbledon and US Open champion. We will give him a chance but ultimately favor Djokovic to win in four sets.
While a win in the third round of the Australian Open will be tough to come by for Shapovalov, he can use the match as an opportunity to raise his profile. We expect him to test the world number one and force Nole to be at his very best. One or two tiebreaks could be in order when the two face off at Melbourne Park. Djokovic remains our pick to win the Grand Slam, but never say never when a future star of the sport steps onto the court.
