Australian Open Third Round Upsets and Updates

Australian Open action is entering the fourth round at Melbourne Park. Here’s a look at who made it and who didn’t in the third.

Let’s begin again with a look at the top seeds during the third round of the Australian Open. World number one Novak Djokovic setup a meeting with rising Canadian tennis star Denis Shapovalov. As we predicted prior to the match, Djokovic defeats the 19-year-old in exactly four sets, winning 6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0. He advances to the fourth, facing the 15th seeded Daniil Medvedev next.

On the women’s singles side of the action, Simona Halep entered a highly anticipated matchup against American tennis legend Venus Williams. The American is a two-time finalist at the Australian Open. It is the top seeded Halep who wins though, taking the match in straight sets.

The Romanian great will go from one Williams to another when she faces one of the favorites this year at Melbourne Park in Serena Williams next. Their fourth round match could determine who will be the sole favorite moving forward. The way both are playing, either stands a fantastic chance at glory this year.

Williams wins her third round match against teenage challenger Dayana Yastremska with ease, comforting the young opponent after her win. She advances to meet Halep, winning 6-2 6-1. After the American great defeated Eugenie Bouchard earlier in the Grand Slam, Genie called Williams the favorite to take the women’s singles title.

Another veteran women’s singles star in Petra Kvitová wins her third round match over the red hot young Swiss player Belinda Bencic. Kvitová, a two-time US Open champion, wins 6-1 6-4, knocking out the Hopman Cup winner.
