British number one Kyle Edmund has pulled out of tournaments in both Marseille and Rotterdam. Are injuries getting the best of him?

After a disappointing opening round exit from the 2019 Australian Open, British number one Kyle Edmund is already pulling out of tournaments this coming month. He will miss action in both Marseille and Rotterdam.

Edmund dropped his opener at Melbourne Park to Tomas Berdych in straight sets. Berdych would win 6-3 6-0 7-5 before advancing all the way to the fourth round where he would fall to eventual runner-up Rafael Nadal.

The issue for Edmund in 2019 could be his knee. Last year, he ended his season early due to ongoing issues with his knee, bringing an end to one of his best years to date. Edmund notched his first ever ATP singles title in 2018 at Antwerp.

Edmund, on the other hand, does not appear to be overly concerned about the knee. Posting to Instagram this week, he is already announcing his playing Fever-Tree Championships later this year. Fans can only hope that it’s nothing to worry about and that Edmund will be back to his old self in a few weeks.

The Australian Open loss drops Edmund 15 places in the men’s singles rankings. Atop the rankings is the champion Novak Djokovic. Nole is now a seven-time champ at the Australian Open, defeating Nadal in the finals. Edmund’s ranking drop is one of the most standout moves following action at Melbourne Park. Going the other direction, Lucas Pouille does jump up 14 places, becoming the world number seven following a semifinals run.

We hope to see a healthy and competitive Kyle Edmund on the 2019 ATP Tour. His ongoing knee issues do not appear to be anything major. If they get the best of him though, his absence could make way for plenty of other rising ATP tennis stars to take over. Men’s and women’s singles tennis both are seeing a new generation challenge the veteran greats. Stay tuned to see how and when Edmund bounces back.
