Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic wins the 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships, defeating Petra Kvitova and jumping in the singles rankings.
Belinda Bencic wins the women’s singles title at the 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships. Defeating now world number three Petra Kvitova in the finals, Bencic is moving higher in the rankings this week. She becomes the world number 23 on the WTA Tour.
Previously, Bencic has gone as high as the world number seven ranking in women’s singles. That was back in 2016. At just 21-years-old, the Swiss tennis star is emerging as one of the top players in the sport. She could touch career heights again later this year.
A finals win over a player the caliber of Kvitova is huge for Bencic. She takes the title, winning in three sets in Dubai. Bencic is easily one of the top players to watch right now on the WTA Tour. At the Australian Open earlier this year, Kvitova and Bencic squared off in the round of 32. Kvitova got the best of her then but Bencic avenges her loss by taking the title in Dubai.
Take a look at the women’s singles rankings as of Monday. Bencic moves up 22 places, making a massive jump following her Dubai Tennis Championships title.
Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei jumps four places into the world number 27 ranking following her semifinals appearance in Dubai. She falls to Kvitova in a tough three set match but the Taiwanese tennis veteran would go on to take the women’s double title this week.
As for Kvitova, she inches closer to career heights. Now the world number three in women’s singles, the Czech tennis star looks to challenge the likes of Simona Halep and Naomi Osaka in the coming weeks. She will need to keep up tremendous momentum if she hopes to become world number one on the WTA Tour though.
Can Belinda Bencic revisit the WTA Top 10 in 2019? If she keeps up her current pace, there is no reason to think otherwise. Women’s singles tennis, however, is packed with dozens of talented young stars. She is competing with some of the future superstars of the WTA Tour.
