Swiss tennis star Roger Federer has escaped defeat for the second straight match at the 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships.

Roger Federer makes his way into the 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships quarterfinals. It hasn’t been an easy ride thus far though. The second seed and heavy favorite needed three sets to win both of his first two matches in Dubai this week.

In the round of 16, Federer came face to face with Fernando Verdasco. After Federer took the first set, Verdasco forced a third as the two traded momentum throughout the match. Federer manages a victory by closing out strong to win 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Federer reaches the quarterfinals in Dubai for the 11th time in his career. He is a seven-time champion in men’s singles at the tournament and must be considered the favorite moving forward. Despite his two hard-fought matches, a win is a win and Federer remains the player to beat at the 2019 Dubai Tennis Championships.

The big news in men’s singles was the upset to top seeded Kei Nishikori. The Japanese tennis star falls to Hubert Hurkacz in an unexpected three set match. With Nishikori out of the mix, Federer is the clearcut favorite in men’s singles the rest of the way.

Federer’s two matches are both a testament to the quality of players he’s facing and his own resilience. The Swiss legend is arguably the greatest tennis player to ever play the sport. He is not going away lightly anytime he steps onto the courts. The challenges he’s faces so far in Dubai, however, reveal that men’s singles is witnessing a high level of competition on the 2019 ATP Tour. Federer moves on though and enters the quarterfinals action next.
