Nick Kyrgios completes the biggest upset so far at the 2019 Mexican Open. He knocks out the top seed and heavy favorite in a wild three match.

Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios is plenty capable of the type of win he managed this week at the Mexican Open. He doesn’t, however, always bring that same high-level consistency to the courts. This time around, Kyrgios brought his best and would not go away lightly.

Facing the top seed and heavy favorite in Rafael Nadal, the young Australian came up against the top contender in men’s singles at the event. A first set win for Nadal made it seem as though this match would go as expected. Rafa took the first with ease, winning 6-3. He was unable to close out the match though…

light. Hot. Must Watch WTA Stars

Kyrgios survived time and time again throughout the match, including when he faced three match points in the third set tiebreak. What a match. Hats off to the young Australian who is always fun to watch when he’s on the courts.

Ousting the top seed and favorite, Kyrgios wins 3-6, 7-6 (2), 7-6 (6). Looking at their career head to head, the young tennis star has seen success against Nadal in the past. This match win evens the score with Nadal as he brings their career record to 3-3 following the match.

With Nadal out in Acapulco, look out for the second seeded Alexander Zverev. He remains alive, along with the third seeded American John Isner. Kyrgios will go up against Swiss tennis star Stan Wawrinka in his quarterfinals matchup. As the round of 16 action wraps up, there is plenty of talent left in the men’s singles field. Anyone can take the title and that now includes Kyrgios.

dark. Next. Is Federer the best ever?

Nadal is a two-time champion at the Mexican Open. His absence from the action paves the way for a new champion in men’s singles. Is Kyrgios capable of a title run? The young Australian last won an ATP singles title at Brisbane in 2018. The tournament is now wide open following his upset over the top seeded Nadal.
